The Serenity Prayer is a timeless source of wisdom and comfort for those experiencing suffering and navigating challenges in life. However, as our understanding of trauma, resilience, and the human experience shifts and moves, it is valuable to revisit and reimagine these words in a way that resonates with our ever-changing lives.
My Rewritten Serenity Prayer
How This Unfolded
I was providing an 8-day in-person intensive for female-identified partners who have been deeply hurt by deceptive sexuality, infidelity, and betrayal. On the 3rd day, before everyone arrived, I did a short drop-in meditation. I wanted to prepare myself to be fully present. My intention was to strengthen my capacity, so I could hold all of them, and the depth of what they were about to tap into throughout the day.
And then, the serenity prayer began to move inside of me. The hum of it was profound, it was creating an unwinding of sorts, and then it unfolded. The words like pearls strung together, of luminescent white and with qualities ascribed to them such as purity, sincerity, and new beginnings. And when that experience settled in me, and I was coming up from the drop-in meditation, I rewrote the serenity prayer personally for me, for them, and for all others who are suffering.
Why This Version
I deeply appreciate the powerful simplicity of the original serenity prayer; it is sacred rhythm of words that has a heartbeat of healing. However, my rewritten prayer delves deeper into the nuances of self compassion, courage, and the ongoing process of becoming. It emphasizes the importance of:
- Inner Wisdom: Trusting your gut and inner knowing.
- Authenticity: Facing your reality with courage and honesty.
- Self-Acceptance: Embracing your evolving self and your journey.
- Resilience: Letting go of old stories and embracing new beginnings.
